Will the USA become a Totalitarian gov someday?

Rome was actually a republic once and then it shifted over to a dictatorship. Also in star wars the republic turned into a Totalitarian galactic empire quit rapidly. Could a president manipulate the public to the point he could have absolute power in a sense?
