Why isn't cutting the bloated military spending budget one of the solutions proposed to cut the deficit?

We can cut the military but that decision would come with some conditions. A significant cut in the military would mean we would have to bring troops home from areas stationed overseas - both combat and non-combat troops - and close many of the bases on foreign soil. This would force other nations to spend more on their own military. The result could be to improve the fiscal picture of the US by causing the rest of the world to go into a deep recession.
